When you are considering updating living spaces for older adults, a little research goes a long way. Important changes for safety and comfort can be made without breaking the bank.
Here are some key points to help with those small updates or renovations.
Door Handles
Gripping round doorknobs can be difficult or painful for some older adults so replacing them with lever style hardware is a great start.
It’s much easier to push down on a lever to open a door if you have frail or sore hands. The same goes for taps as well.
Floors
Trips and slips are very dangerous for older adults and should be eliminated completely if possible.
Rugs can cause falls so best to avoid them if possible or place non-slip mats underneath. Choose low pile carpets as they are easier to walk on and help prevent tripping.
Look for all trip points between rooms, doors, patios etc. If replacing floors be sure to have seamless smooth surfaces throughout. If not replacing floors then very gradual ramps should be placed over those trip points.
Floors in wet areas should have non slip surfaces to help stop a devastating fall. A good idea if you’re older or not! .
Lighting
Pay attention to the lighting, especially in busy traffic areas. Ensure there is adequate lighting so an elderly person can clearly see where they are walking.
Having well placed light switches also helps older people use lights rather than not bother if the switch is too far away.
Stairs and entrances should also be very well lit to stop falls.
Stairs
In addition to stairs being well lit, it’s very important that handrails run the full length of the stairs. Preferably on both sides if possible.
Also, the steps should be firm and not slippery in any way. Install tough anti-slip tape if the surface allows it.
Handrails
Handrails and grab rails are great idea in key points throughout the home. For example, on stairs, in the toilet, bathroom and entrance areas. Anywhere where an older person has to get up or down is a good rule or thumb.
Bathroom
In addition to grab rails and non-slip floor options, a removable handheld shower head can sometimes be easier for elderly people. Having the option to hold the shower head can make it easier to bathe and help reduce the risk of falls.
Seating
Obviously you want it to be comfortable but also choose a recliner or lift chair that is both easy to get in and out of. It’s also a good idea to make sure the controls are easy to use and accessible for that particular person. Here are 4 important questions when choosing a recliner.
Hope this helps!
